Health And Safety Policy
Gardeners Enfield Town Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Enfield Town is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that safeguards the health, safety and welfare of our employees, subcontractors, clients, visitors and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing risks in gardens and outdoor spaces, promoting safe systems of work, and complying with all relevant health and safety legislation and industry good practice.
Policy Objectives
Our primary objectives are to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and environmental harm arising from our gardening activities. We aim to identify and control hazards associated with garden maintenance, landscaping, planting, lawn care, hedge cutting, tree work and the use of powered and hand tools. We will ensure that all work is planned, supervised and carried out safely and responsibly.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Gardeners Enfield Town holds overall responsibility for the implementation and periodic review of this Health and Safety Policy. Management will provide the resources, information, training and supervision necessary to maintain safe working conditions. They will ensure that risk assessments are completed, safe working procedures are followed and that staff have appropriate equipment and protective clothing to carry out their duties safely.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees and subcontractors are required to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. They must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, wear the required personal protective equipment, report hazards or incidents promptly and participate in health and safety training provided by the company.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting work at any garden or site, we will assess the potential risks associated with the tasks to be undertaken. This may include hazards such as uneven ground, slips and trips, working at height, moving vehicles, power tools, manual handling, use of chemicals, adverse weather and interaction with the public or pets. Based on the assessment, we will adopt suitable control measures, such as safe access routes, barriers, clear signage, safe systems for working at height and controlled use of machinery and substances.
Training, Competence and Supervision
Gardeners Enfield Town will ensure that staff are appropriately trained and competent to carry out their allocated tasks safely. This includes induction training, task-specific instruction, refresher training and supervision for new or inexperienced staff. Where specialist work is involved, such as tree surgery or the use of particular pesticides, we will only use trained and competent personnel who meet the relevant standards and legal requirements.
Use of Machinery and Tools
All tools and machinery used in our gardening work will be suitable for the task, properly maintained and inspected regularly. Staff will be trained in the safe operation, cleaning, transportation and storage of equipment such as lawn mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws and other powered tools, as well as hand tools. Guards, safety features and emergency stop devices must never be removed or bypassed. Damaged or defective tools and machinery will be taken out of service immediately and reported for repair or replacement.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risks cannot be eliminated by other means, Gardeners Enfield Town will provide suitable personal protective equipment. Depending on the nature of the tasks, this may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and ear protection, high-visibility clothing, hard hats and respiratory protection. Employees must use and take care of the protective equipment provided and report any loss, damage or defects without delay so that replacements can be arranged.
Chemicals, Substances and Environmental Safety
When using fertilisers, weed killers or other horticultural chemicals, we will select products that are appropriate and lawful for the intended use and follow all safety instructions on the manufacturer’s label. Storage, mixing, application and disposal will be carried out in a way that minimises risk to people, pets, wildlife and the wider environment. Only trained staff will handle such substances, and they will use the required protective equipment and safe application methods.
Manual Handling and Physical Wellbeing
Gardening and grounds maintenance often involve lifting, carrying and repetitive movements. We will aim to minimise manual handling risks by using mechanical aids, correct lifting techniques and task rotation where practical. Staff will be encouraged to work at a sensible pace, take breaks where necessary and report any strains, discomfort or health concerns arising from their work so that adjustments can be considered.
Traffic Management and Public Safety
When working in areas accessible to clients, visitors or the public, Gardeners Enfield Town will plan operations to minimise disruption and risk. This includes maintaining tidy work areas, managing cables and hoses to avoid trip hazards, using warning signs or barriers where appropriate, and being vigilant when operating machinery near pathways, driveways or entrances. Vehicles will be parked safely, and loading or unloading will take place in a controlled manner.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences will be reported, recorded and, where necessary, investigated to identify root causes and prevent recurrence. Staff will be made aware of emergency procedures, including how to respond to injuries, equipment failures, fires and sudden changes in weather conditions. First aid supplies will be available, and access routes for emergency services will be kept clear whenever possible.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
Gardeners Enfield Town values the input of staff and clients in improving health and safety performance. We encourage open communication about potential hazards, suggestions for safer working methods and feedback on our gardening operations. This policy will be reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, best practice, technology or the nature of the services we provide.
Policy Review and Authority
This Health and Safety Policy is endorsed by the management of Gardeners Enfield Town, who are responsible for ensuring that it is communicated and understood throughout the company. The policy will be reviewed at least annually, or sooner if there are significant changes to our work activities, locations or applicable legal requirements. All staff are required to comply with this policy as a condition of their work with the company.
